Hiring the Next Generation of Independent Insurance Agents

The pandemic has driven major shifts in the way employees experience their workplaces and what they expect from their employers. At the same, Gen Z’s presence in the workforce continues to grow.

As these two trends converge, employers across industries need to reexamine the way they recruit and retain talent. To help independent agents better position their agencies to embrace the next generation in a post-pandemic world, Liberty Mutual and Safeco Insurance revealed findings from the 2022 Agency Growth Study in a new research report: Hiring the Next Generation of Independent Insurance Agents.

Highlights from the survey of 730+ independent agents include:

  • The next generation of talent is here, with more than half of new hires being millennials and nearly 1 in 4 from Gen Z
  • In 2022, more than half of agencies plan to have employees work from the office full time despite indications that workers are happier and more productive when working from home
  • Of agency staff who work remotely at least one day a week, 67% said their work-life balance was better, 61% said their personal happiness was better, and 55% said they were more productive
  • While three-quarters of all agencies say they are recruiting, growth-focused agencies (or those aiming for aggressive growth) are hiring 2-3x more than agencies focused on slow and steady growth
