Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS) 

The Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS) continuing education program was developed to provide an opportunity for insurance agents, brokers, CSRs, and in-house risk managers or insurance buyers to gain specialized expertise in agribusiness and farm insurance with risk management. Completing the AFIS certification will ensure that the agent, broker, underwriter, or insurance purchaser understands the most important insurance needs of agribusiness and farms.

How do I obtain the AFIS designation?

To earn your AFIS designation, you must complete the five core courses. The designation is valid for a period of 12 months once obtained/completed. After this time period, you will have to renew your designation.

How do I maintain the AFIS designation?

To renew your certification, you must complete 6 hours of approved continuing education credit each year. You can take an online reaccreditation course or attend an approved educational event. Every 3 years, AFIS designees must earn their 6 hours of credit by attending an IRMI Emmett J Vaughan Agribusiness Conference.

What course topic options are available with the AFIS Designation?

There are five required courses to earn the AFIS designation. Each course has a multiple-choice exam at the end. The courses consist of:

  • Farm Liability
  • Farm Auto, Workers Compensation, and Umbrella Insurance
  • Special Farm Property Insurance Lines
  • Miscellaneous Farm Insurance Lines
Are continuing education hours available when taking the courses to obtain the AFIS designation?

Yes, all the AFIS courses are approved for state continuing education in all 50 states. Colorado specific CE hours are listed below. You must request CE when you register for each class and pay the $15 fee to get CE.
