Each year I am tasked with writing an article to summarize the efforts that PIIAC has taken to serve the Colorado independent insurance industry. This has been a challenging and exciting year for the entire industry, and we have been working hard to be an excellent resource for our members.

Early in the year, PIIAC saw a great turnout at our first InsurEXPO, a one-day event filled with networking, education opportunities, and a trade show to interact with all the vendors who generously support our association. Our annual convention at Blackhawk had a different format, that was very well received. We allowed more time for agency personnel to network and get to know one another. The conference was geared towards agency leaders and those on the path to becoming leaders. We had a full agenda with a lot of high-end speakers. Insurance Commissioner Mike Conway joined to speak with us about the challenges in the marketplace and newly appointed Big “I” President and CEO, Charles Symington, came in to speak to us about some of the initiatives of your National Associations. The highlight of the event was the Annual Awards dinner, where we honored the recipients of the awards. This year we also established the “Fred Lautenbach Community Service Award”. Giving this award to Fred was truly one of the greatest honors of my career.  Engagement in all our events is always appreciated and we do feel that taking part with your peers will always leave you just a bit better than when you arrived!

The hard market continues to create unique challenges for our members. The contraction of the marketplace has accelerated the need for more solutions. Legislatively in 2023 we saw the passage of HB-1288 i.e. the FAIR Plan, due to go into effect in 2025. This will enable agents to have another resource to get coverage for their clients. In 2024 you will see a lot more resources and discussion around the hard market. We will also continue to grow our market access program to give outlets to our members.

We look forward to seeing all our members in 2024. You will see the team buzzing around the state to visit agencies. We would also love to see you at some of our events. The second annual PIIAC InsurEXPO will be held on March 28, in Englewood. We are excited to share that on top of the trade show, this event will be geared towards educating you on the trials and tribulations of the hard market and how to best overcome them. The Don Nabity Golf Tournament will once again take place in Evergreen, on June 10.

In January we will have a BIG Announcement coming that will be a great benefit to all our members. Stay Tuned!!

Happy Holidays from everyone at PIIAC and have a wonderful New Year.
